[Reblog] In Desperate Need Of Love: Lightning Returns

I 1,000% support this message! I’m no longer ashamed to say that Lightning Returns is my all-time favourite Final Fantasy title. After struggling with the combat system and time limit at first, it was truly rewarding when I finally mastered the game. Square Enix nailed the “world is dying” vibe and created one of the most innovative open world designs I’ve seen in a game. It was also a beautiful conclusion to my shero’s epic trilogy.

*Disclaimer: My opinion is extremely biased.

FFLR1Hello, one and all, and welcome to another In Desperate Need of Love, the posting that showers praise on the overlooked gems of the video game world. The game I’m covering today is one that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. You see, this is the title that made me decide to buy a PS3. From the moment that I saw the trailer (and in particular, the combat system in action), I knew that I wanted to play it. So, when I bought the console, I also grabbed the game … and then didn’t have the time to finish it. Well, after slogging through multiple hours of gameplay, I finally finished it last month. And you know what? I was not disappointed. So, what is this slab of joy? Why, it’s Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns, of course.

Yes, that’s right, the game that rarely scores higher…

    1. I recommend trying them someday, even if you had issues with the first XIII game. Both of the sequels offer very different gameplay experiences and really grow the characters from the first game. I love all 3 games, but my opinion is biased 🙂

  1. The XIII trilogy has always gotten a bad rap from my pov. Was the first one a bit too linear? Yes, imo. But it was gorgeous, well written, and had an innovative take on RPG combat. Both sequels did something that most huge devs don’t do with their flagship series – took tremendous chances with the gameplay systems; tried something different. Did it always work out? That’s a matter of opinion. But the level of polish and the way those innovative systems fit together in each game was tremendous and I think they are all better than they get credit for. Also, “shero” is my word of the day.

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I don’t understand all the hate I see for trilogy online. I’m a weirdo who has a special connection with the story and Lightning, so that could be why I’m extra sensitive to the hate, haha.

Honestly, I just wish everyone would respect each other’s Final Fantasy choices. Square Enix at least tries new things every iteration. Just because people hate one direction doesn’t mean others don’t love it. I know I still haven’t played many of the great classic games yet, including the widely admired VI. I’m really looking forward to playing the whole series, one day 😀 Ugh! Backlogs…

  2. I have Lightning Returns but I’ve never played it. My experiences with XIII and XIII-2 have been mixed at best and I’ve never found time to go back and give the trilogy another shot.

    1. The FFXIII games are the best thing ever to me, but that’s just my personal opinion, haha. I certainly respect opinions that differ from mine. We all have different tastes! 🙂 I hope you have a better time with the games if you ever give the trilogy another shot.

    1. There was another FF game I really liked with a dying planet theme and this awesome Great General dude. I forget what one that was… 🙂

It’s a lot like Majora’s Mask except Lightning doesn’t have an Ocarina. When you run out of time you start over on day 1, but Lightning keeps all her stats, making your next attempt easier.

        1. I think you lost your bombs, arrows, and temporary items (like letters and those deeds to the Deku Scrub flower thingys). I loved Majora’s Mask! I’d definitely like to read your opinions on Lightning Returns if/when you get to it! Matt’s post made me realize it is my all-time favourite FF game. I knew it was one of the FFXIII games I just couldn’t figure out which one, until now 🙂
