Wednesday’s Weekly Wrap-Up: Super Special Saturday Edition! (2017-01-21)

Oh chaotic life, please just let me play video games, read blogs, and write in peace. I’m really not asking for much here. Uh, yeah… Anyway, it appears that Wednesday happened a few days ago, but I still want to ramble on the internet about things so here’s my overdue weekly progress report that nobody asked for!

Backlog Battle Progress

I’ve conquered an area called the Feymarch to get two awesome summons for Rydia, Asura and Leviathan. The first boss hit like a truck and it was able to heal itself. Thankfully, Rosa knew Reflect! After casting that on the boss, it kept healing my party members instead of itself. I was very amused whenever that happened.

My party’s stats: Cecil Lv 37, Rydia Lv 36, Kain Lv 39, Rosa Lv 37, Edge Lv 32. Now I’m heading to the next story area, the Sealed Cave. I’ll keep pondering why I have this obsessive desire to do side quests in games.

I had a huge Fallout binge last weekend. Nothing cheers me up more than wandering around in a depressing post-apocalyptic world! I knocked out several side quests that had me doing everything from helping a cowardly radio DJ man-up to slaying a terrifying beast lurking inside the Museum of Witchcraft. I also resumed the main story line at long last. I was pleased that the first thing my character did was recount her story so far to a caring detective. I had pretty much forgotten everything so that really jogged my memory. After my loyal dog led me to a familiar coldblooded mercenary’s hideout, my character embarked on a rather traumatic memory journey that showed me more about my son’s fate, and revealed scary details about the Institute organization that’s terrorizing the Commonwealth. The Brotherhood of Steel also made a grand entrance so it seems I’ll be working with them again in the near future.

Shiny Trophies Unlocked:
Unstoppable Wanderer (Silver) – Reach Level 25
Masshole (Bronze) – Kill 300 people
Wasteland D.I.Y. (Silver) – Craft 100 items
What’s Yours Is Mine (Silver) – Pick 50 locks
Reunions (Bronze) – Complete “Reunions”
Print’s Not Dead (Bronze) – Read 20 magazines
Lovable (Bronze) – Reach maximum relationship level with a companion
Dangerous Minds (Bronze) – Complete “Dangerous Minds”
My character is at level 30, and if I don’t get too distracted by several side quests I picked up, I’m heading off to the Glowing Sea with my new Synth buddy. I will be searching for a rogue agent who’s hiding out in this heavily irradiated area. Finally, I have an excuse to dust off my Power Armor!

I didn’t try any dungeons but I had fun wandering around the wastes of Far Eden. Considering I have two lengthy RPGs on the go, it was relaxing to just mindlessly shoot some angry robots in a desert setting. I found a few sparkling Prismatic Cores and ended up on the doorstep of a new optional dungeon: Proving Grounds.

Nothing leveled up except Seth, who is now in the level 20 club. I’ll be trying Proving Ground next.

Games Shamefully Purchased:

Zero! However, my willpower collapsed and I preordered a Nintendo Switch and the Master Edition of LoZ Breath of the Wild after the big event last week. I was on the fence about getting one (backlog reasons), but the hype train ran me over so I want one, now!! Luckily, I was able to use my work break to stand in line at a nearby game store. I’m glad everyone in line got the Switch, but predictably silly Nintendo decided to do a limited run on the Zelda CE. The store I was at only had 4 for preorder and I was second in line.

My inner swag addicted Zelda fanatic squealed when I saw this. Of course it has to be a stupid limited edition that not everyone gets to have. FYI Nintendo, this only pisses off loyal fans and benefits evil resellers. STOP DOING THIS!

Random Weekly Ramblings

  • The far better bloggers out there have summed up last week’s big Switch event much better than I ever could. I’m just going to spew my two cents, just because:
Good – I’m so HYPED for Zelda BoTW, that new Mario game looks amazing, and this Amiibo addict is pleased to learn of two new Zelda ones. *starts twitching*
Bad – I’m concerned about the battery life, the accessories are stupidly overpriced, seems to continue the trend of laughable third party support/ lack of good online system, and not a peep about Metroid. Poor Samus
  • I’m the proud 2nd place finisher of The Shameful Narcissist’s Final Fantasy Tarot Card project. I even got a beautiful digital ribbon to show off:

My greatest achievement since, well, ever!

“It’s only looking back, by comparison with what comes after, that you really understand that’s what happiness felt like.” – Kellogg, Fallout 4

  1. Wednesdays are Saturdays now? I’ll take it! I, too, am a side quest fanatic. I want to be able to say I completed as much of the game as possible. The only tasks I don’t do are the ones that are too randomized, time consuming, or difficult. There’s one in IV involving an item called Pink Tails that I’ve never completed because it takes way too long and it’s randomized on whether or not a particular rare enemy drops them AND you need like 100. No thank you lol.

I’m hoping Nintendo figures out the foibles with the Switch. It’s my original, favorite system, and I want them to do well. The online thing seems to be a mess. Sony and Microsoft have a major corner of the market with that, and the big N doesn’t seem to be doing anything to wedge their way in. They can’t do the same thing as the established companies, and I agree with CBA about offering it for free for a decent length of time in order to build a base. I’m trying to maintain some cautious optimism here, and Breath of the Wild looks AMAZING. I’m sure I’ll see a ton of wonderful LPs for it. Cannot wait.

    1. If it were up to me, every day would be Saturday! 🙂 Oh god. That quest sounds like a pass for me too. I have many other Final Fantasy worlds to visit this year so I won’t have time for that.

I hope so too! My inner child is in love with big Nintendo. I probably would have never become a gamer without their beloved IPs. I’m not big on online play so it won’t bother me too much if it sucks. BoTW instantly became a MUST BUY for me when I saw that touching scene with Link holding a sobbing Zelda. The story seems good and the world looks huge. I can’t wait! I took March 3rd off so it’ll be my Switch Day. I’m super excited 😀

  2. I really wanted that Zelda special edition, but I’m going to pass on it for money’s sake. The Switch game costs here are silly high.
I loved the Museum of Witchcraft quest in Fallout 4. It had a suitably creepy atmosphere before you finally face down what was in there. You’re right about the main quest, and that’s one of the reasons I don’t enjoy open world games that much: I forget what I’m supposed to be doing!

  3. I have resisted preordering a Switch. Zelda is okay, but I’d rather wait for more games to come out for the system before buying. There online monthly “free” game deal is also insulting when compared to what Sony/Microsoft do.

      1. Some people might say I am entitled for expressing that view, but it’s just what I feel when you see what the competition is offering. You get to keep those relatively new games forever on PS4 whilst Nintendo only give a NES/SNES title for a limited time.

  4. I pre-ordered me a grey Switch with the blue Joy-Con covers from PDP, along with the standard edition of Breath of the Wild. I wanted the CE, but the hour I left to run errands the pre-orders ran out lol.

Definitely stoked to see how the Switch turns out.

    1. I hate it when Nintendo limits fancy CE things. I just upsets loyal fans and makes greedy reseller people happy. EB games has exclusivity on it here, making the stock issues worse. I’ll definitely let you know if I ever find another copy of the Master Edition though!

  5. A lot of good progress on the trophies and side quests there! I also wish I had more time for video games and less time on the rest of life. Life’s a blast of course, but I do remember the good ole days as a kid where I could just sit in front of the TV playing all day without a care in the world.

I also cracked and pre ordered LoZ, but I decided to get it for the Wii U. I’m hoping that the Switch price will go down a bit by Christmas in time for Mario Odyssey. Are you planning on getting any other launch games for the Switch or you’re going to stand strong and just stick to Zelda for now? As a big Zelda fan, I’m guessing that will jump to the top of your priority list on March 3rd right? It’s definitely going to be an awesome day!

    1. Thank you! 🙂 I miss those good ole days too. I had lots of gaming time and no responsibilities, haha.

Good plan! It probably will see a price drop by then. I’m just going to get the new Zelda for March 3rd. I have a feeling that will take up all of my gaming time for a while, lol

      1. I kind of chose not to even though I could have. Then later, I couldn’t get one, so it seems fate decided that my chance was up. It’s ok though. If not getting one meant that someone else who wanted it more like you could get one, then I’m fine with that! 🙂

And thanks! Thanks for reminding me that I need to display that somewhere!
