Wednesday’s Weekly Wrap-Up (2016/12/28)

Oh wow, look at this! I committed to a weekly post and actually followed through with it. I’m off work until Jan. 2nd (I’m going to be so cranky that day), so I’m enjoying my sweet extra gaming time to its fullest. I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas, are continuing with their glorious cultural celebrations, and most importantly, that Santa was kind to everyone!

Backlog Battle Progress

I love this fucking game so much! After an incredibly enjoyable first hour with the Dark Knight Cecil, I couldn’t put the game down. I was forced to take a few breaks to interact with the family I’m staying with, until tomorrow. But yeah, I honestly can’t remember the last time a game was able to hold my interest for such extended periods. I just completed the Tower of Babil, ending a fire fiend’s reign of terror. My journey so far has been full of badass Paladin action, relaxing Gil/Level grinding, challenging boss battles, airship exploration, and I found out what was up with his royal evilness, King Baron. The game has been cycling through party members like crazy too. It’s really hard on my cranky, yet overly sensitive, heart. I’ve learned to not get attached to anyone except Cecil. It’s probably safe to assume Rosa will be okay too.

My stats so far: Cecil Lv 34, Rydia Lv 34, Kain Lv 36, Rosa Lv 34, and Edge Lv 28. My total playtime is a whopping 17 hours and 52 minutes over a few days. I just “borrowed” a vehicle that can traverse the Underworld easily, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

More amusing side-questing and no story progression again this week. I used my advanced lock picking skills to break into the ruined Boston Public Library to return a 200 year overdue library book. I can only imagine the late charges on that, if the people running it were still alive that is. The library contained a raging battle between Super Mutants and Protectron security forces, which was already in progress I swear. I stalked around with my buddy Hancock, and cleared out everything left alive to complete this quest. I got loads of ammo and other goodies from the corpses of enemies who had killed each other for me. You have to capitalize on opportunity in this harsh post-apocalyptic world!

My character is still at level 22 but close to a level-up. I have a few more easy side quests to tackle and then I’ll continue with the story line, maybe.

I’m loving those High Jump Boots. They make the platforming mechanics much more forgiving. I managed to snag the Varia Suit with their help as well. Now all of the damage against poor Samus has been halved. Things are looking up! My next goal is to get the stronger Wave Beam from the “No Fair” region, and then I think I’ll try the first boss. I can only imagine how horribly that will go down…

I have 1 Energy Tank and can hold 20 devastating Missiles. My backlog side quest is to beat this before 2017, and next year is quickly approaching.

I had fun in Far Eden this week. The load times are much shorter now, and the map has a convenient “Return to Joule’s Crawler” option that I didn’t notice pre-patch. I’m still working my way through the optional dungeons to get stronger for the ‘Big Bad Boss Bot’ fight. I fully cleared Crucible after a couple of tries. In the optional dungeons, you have to complete all 3 side objectives (time limit, find hidden switches, and find a yellow key) in one run to unlock the big shiny treasure crate at the end of the dungeon. The Crucible is basically just one big room full of rabid robots, with an angry boss bot, Fire Eyes, during the end wave. It was easy to find all the switches and the key, but taking out the angry robots within the time limit was a challenge. I beat it with a mere 8 seconds left on the timer, even though I out level the dungeon. I got lots of colourful Cores and silver rarity parts from the fights, so I also upgraded Joule’s companions, after my victory dance of course.
Glorious Achievement Unlocked:
Workbench Wonder (20 GS) – Crafted 50 parts
Joule’s weapon and Mack are at level 20, Seth is at level 19, and Duncan is at level 18. After my upgrading spree, they all look like mismatched Frankin-Corebots, but they are awesome at kicking ass.

Games shamefully purchased:
The rest of the games I bought for my “Year of Final Fantasy” backlog side quest arrived. This is it for buying games for a while. I mean it… really. Well, thanks to Cheap Boss Attack, I might be buying VVVVVV and Letter Quest: Grim’s Journey soon. But then that’s it!

  1. Final Fantasy Origins: I & II (PS)
  2. Final Fantasy III (DS)
  3. Final Fantasy Anthology: V & VI (PS)
  4. Final Fantasy IX (PS)
  5. World of Final Fantasy (Vita)
  6. Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy (PSP)

Random Weekly Ramblings

  • I was truly saddened to hear that Carrie Fisher passed away this week. Star Wars just wouldn’t have been the same without her, and our world will certainly be a lot less bright in the absence of this iconic star. I not only remember her as Princess Leia, I also have happy memories of her role in a Christmas chick flick, called “It’s Christmas, Carol!”. Her character made lots of Star Wars references, along with other amusing antics in this otherwise boring film.
I never would have finished this terrible movie if Carrie Fisher wasn’t in it. May she R.I.P. This world will forever miss her! 😦
  • Years ago, I made a New Year’s Resolution to not make anymore New Year’s Resolutions. I’m proud to say I’ve stuck with this and will not be changing a damn thing about myself next year, even though my life could probably use an overhaul. Looking back, 2016 has been a crazy blur of chaos, and I truly hope 2017 is a glorious year for everyone! 🙂

Boy, I say boy! According to Google, 2017 is the Year of the Rooster.

Now if you’ll excuse me, Cecil needs my help to go vanquish evil crystal thieves!

Feel free to share your glorious conquests in that comment area thingy below. I could honestly use more inspiration…

  1. I’ll always love Carrie Fisher’s role in Star Wars, but my favorite was her role as Carol in the horror comedy The Burbs. I had just rewatched A New Hope for the 100th time and even woke up wearing my Star Wars t-shirt when I saw the news of her passing. Truly devastating times.

If you have a mobile device that’s even remotely decent, I’d see if you can grab Letter Quest over there instead! It’s free and doesn’t include any sort of intrusive microtransactions (just a one-time payment to unlock some goodies).

I’m glad you’re still enjoying FFIV and Metroid!

    1. I don’t think I’ve seen the Burbs yet. I’ll have to check that out in her memory. Oh wow.. That’s an extra sad way to have found out 😦

I have a cheap Android phone that could probably run it. I also test cell phones for a living and I have access to over 40 different phones that could likely handle it when I go back to work, haha. I’m addicted to shiny PSN trophies though. I’m still leaning toward getting the Vita or PS4 version.

Thanks! I can’t believe I’ve waited so long before playing these great games.

      1. The Burbs is on Netflix, I believe. At least in the States (not sure where you’re location, but 90% of the people I’ve met through WordPress blogs appear to be in Canada!).

The trophies in Letter Quest are a bit tricky and random, since you never have control over your tiles. Trophies are always an incentive though (as someone who wasted an hour of their life platinum’ing that stupid mayo jar tapping game on PS4 *and* Vita).

I don’t think I’ve added you on PSN, but I’d like to! I’m PepperedSnoot over there.

        1. Yeah our Canadian version of Netflix sucks (stupid Canadian content regulations here…Sigh) but I’ll check to see if we have it. Hmm… Those trophies do sound frustrating. I’ve wasted lots of time trying to platinum things, haha. Now I’m leaning toward the better mobile experience. I’ll flip a coin or something.

Nope, I don’t think I have you on PSN. I’ll add you when I get home tomorrow afternoon!

            1. Yeah, eh! 🙂 We’re secretly planning to take over WordPress, but don’t tell anyone.

Our silly government wants us to watch more Canadian programming. The reason why we prefer American shows is because our stuff is usually terrible. Making laws to force us to see it will not help.

    1. I highly recommend it! The main story goes by fast, but you get sidetracked by so many things along the way. It’s also full of dark humor, which I personally love. I hope you enjoy it when you play it. Let me know what you think!

Thanks! I hope everyone gets to play tons of games next year 🙂

  2. Wow, that’s a really overdue library book.

You are off till early January? Lucky sod! I have had to work seven straight night shifts during the Xmas season. Grumble, grumble. Oh well, at least I have this weekend off.

It will be good to see 2016 finish. Lots of talented people have passed away. It’s so sad that Fisher died now that Star Wars is back and even worse her mom followed her a day later 😦

    1. I was strategic with my vacation days so now I’m reaping the benefits 🙂 Ouch! 7 night shifts sounds brutal. Enjoy your well deserved weekend off.

I was really sad to hear her Mom died shortly after 😦 Also, I heard the guy who played Alf died a few days ago too. 2016 is really coldblooded…

  3. Such a talented actress (and writer!)… it seems like we lost so many talented people this year. And now her mother has passed away, too! Sigh. And I have to say, I was so excited when Disney bought the rights to Star Wars, simply because my favorite princess was now a Disney princess 🙂

As always, I am impressed with your tenacity for finishing your games! Hopefully you’ll be able to squeak in the rest of Metroid before the year ends!!

    1. The murderous 2016 needs to end already (but not before I finish Metroid, haha). Princess Leia is much more awesome than all of the other Disney Princesses combined 🙂

Thank you once again for the encouraging words. I left Metroid to last minute it seems, and I will be frantically blasting my way through the game today. I can think of no better way to spend the last hours of 2016 🙂

  4. You have made a lot of video game progress this week! With moving I could only pick up Rayman Legends here and there but I hope to play more games soon. I was surprised to see you pick up Final Fantasy Origins on PSOne. That is a game that I bought and it did not click for me at all. I even have a really great condition strategy guide for it because I never used it! One of these days I’ll take the time to sell it but I always had a feeling it might be valuable one day.

    1. Thanks! Moving is such a pain. I hope you get settled in soon.

I’ve yet to experience the beginnings of Final Fantasy so I’m excited to try it out. People are selling older strategy guides on eBay for nice sums of cash. You will probably be able to flip it for a nice profit. 🙂

      1. It really is and I can’t wait to be settled in. I’m exhausting myself in the process but getting there a little more each day. It is definitely a lot different than later Final Fantasy’s and can be pretty punishing but a lot of the qualities we love about Final Fantasy are still there. It is crazy how much some people will pay for a nice strategy guide but then again, I have a few that I really cherish as well so I can understand it 🙂

  5. I’m so happy you’re enjoying FFIV! It is such an underrated game, and the more people who play it and love it the better! I think it gets loss in the shuffle of VI and VII, because when people think of earlier Final Fantasies, those huge names (numbers?) pop up. I’m thinking V is considered forgettable, but I don’t want to commit to that until I play it myself. You are speeding through IV at the speed of light though! I must ask your opinion on Edward lol.

I’ll probably be purchasing VX6 and the Grim Reaper game soon, too, thanks to CBA, but I’m okay with that. I want to start fitting smaller games in with my large FF/RPG projects, though we’ve already seen how good I am at that hehe.

You should resolve to be more awesome. There you’ve succeeded even before the year starts. Go you!

    1. I’m loving IV! I haven’t progressed any further in it yet though. I forgot about my goal to beat Metroid before 2017. Well, that’s about 14 hours away now, so I must focus on Samus today. From what I’ve seen so far, I’m an Edward fan. The scene with him and Anna by the lake was very emotional, and I love how he helped out during the Lodestone Cavern boss. My expensive Mythril armor didn’t go to waste thanks to him. I’m guessing he will show up in my party again before the end of the game, but don’t tell me, haha.

A scramble type game with a cute Grim Reaper character was an easy sell for me. That’s what I try to do too! It never works out for me though…

Aw, thanks! That means a lot coming from someone who is as awesome as you are 🙂

        1. Good! I can’t believe I haven’t read any spoilers for this game yet. Mother Brain has been defeated (I had to use the infinite health cheat but her reign of terror has ended). I will be returning to my “lightning fast” play through of IV now 🙂

They’re so adorable! It’s almost worth risking my mortal soul to give them a hug.

          1. Was it the one in the jar or that shambling abomination? Yass bad puns forever! You are going through it so fast. There isn’t a lot of grinding that needs to be done in IV. You have to do a bit, but it’s a very streamlined game. Squeenix wasn’t as into side quests at this point so it’s a much more straightforward story. Did you find and loot Eblan castle? If you haven’t a go back, you’ll have a much easier time!

It would be worth it 🙂

            Liked by 1 person

            1. The one in the jar, with the evil army of red dots that kept killing me. The shambling abomination one scares the hell out of me, but I do plan on crushing it whenever I get to Super Metroid.

Yes, I looted Eblan castle before I met Edge. 🙂 I think I grinded too much… All the bosses so far have fallen very easily before the mighty Cecil.

  6. Awesome!!!!
You make the games sound so incredible and tempting.
Wish I didn’t have to earn $, so I could do all of the things I want to.
I’m using up all my spare time walking around Toronto in a parka, scouring the streets for art. I’ve had some good luck…. but, alas, there are no level ups.
There’s also no Boss fights, but I almost got into a fist’a’cuffs shooting a mural in Winnipeg late October! Happy New Year! 😀 😀

  7. Also, that was a nice mention of Carrie Fisher, may she RIP.
My mom adored Debbie Reynolds, and couldn’t ever say anything nice about Eddie leaving her for Liz.
Well, Mother and daughter are together, now. What could be more poignant?

    1. Yep, that silly work thing really chews up a lot of time. I really wish I got paid to play video games and write. That sounds like it would make an epic boss fight though. I hope you got a good mural shot out of it.

It was so tragic how she passed away right after her daughter. May they both rest in peace. 😦

Happy New Year to you as well!
