Wednesday’s Weekly Wrap-Up (2016/12/21)

Some days I just wanna raise the white flag and admit defeat to my omnipotent backlog. I’ve noticed that my powerful enemy’s greatest ally is the quickly ticking away time phenomenon. It’s just so easy to get wrapped up in real life and neglect my important virtual responsibilities. I’ve noticed a few of the much greater bloggers out there do inspiring weekly posts, updating the internet on their glorious gaming conquests. I’ve decided steal their ideas and do a similar weekly thing to keep myself in check.  I have no idea why I chose Wednesday, but this will be the day I do this.

Backlog Battle Progress

This game feels like it has been in progress forever! I just can’t focus on the main story since I keep getting distracted by side quests, and other quirky goings-on in the post-apocalyptic world. This week I donned the Silver Shroud comic book hero persona to save a kidnapped friend, and retrieved a valuable beer dispensing robot from of a bunch of sadistic Raiders. These quests had absolutely nothing do to with the main story.

My character is at Level 22 and my in game BFF is the Mysterious Stranger, who keeps randomly showing up in V.A.T.S. to save my ass.

I gave up trying to get the Varia Suit before the High Jump Boots. Sadly, frantically mashing the controller just wasn’t working out for me, and that damn bat thing always found a way to kill me. I went to the Norfair area to acquire said High Jump Boots, and managed to snag them after a few deaths. I’ll just say this: if you turn the first “r” in Norfair into a space, you get a more fitting name for the area, No fair. I haven’t seen any of the 3 bosses yet. I can only imagine how fun those fights will be…

My next goal is to go get the Varia Suit to stop things stop killing me so quickly. I have a backlog side quest to finish this game before the end of the year, and I don’t intend to fail it. I’ll NARPAS SWORD it, if I have to.

I took a break from Joule’s slow-loading adventure before I gave it another shot this week. A 4GB patch was waiting for me, after my neglected Xbox One demanded an update of course. The load times do seem less annoying now, but they still interrupt the flow of game. I got torn apart by the first encounter with the ‘Big Bad Boss Bot’ so I decided to level up in the optional dungeons before trying to continue. I’ve fully cleared the Brood Hive dungeon now.

Joule’s weapon and Mack are at level 20, and her other Corebot buddies, Seth and Duncan, are a couple levels behind.

Games shamefully purchased:

  1. Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection (PSP)There’s a certain legendary review out there that I want to read so I bumped IV up on my “Need to play” list. After being stuck in slow cross border shipping red tape, my copy finally arrived Thursday. I plan to start it during my much needed Christmas vacation since I’ll be staying with family and the PSP is, well, portable.
  2. The Last Guardian (PS4) – I preordered this damn game last summer because it came with a sweet Collector’s Edition statue. There, I admit it, I’m part of the problem. I hated myself when I picked it up, but I’m pleased to see it got rave reviews. I don’t know when I’ll get to play it though.
  3. Final Fantasy Type-0 HD (Xbox One) –  I’m going to make 2017 my “Year of Final Fantasy” and focus on Square Enix’s epic universe. 2017 also happens to be the 30th Anniversary of the iconic franchise so I timed that perfectly. In preparation, I have ordered a copy of all the games I don’t have yet, and actually want to play. This brand new copy was only $10 and arrived quickly since the seller was in my province. The rest are on the way.

Random Weekly Ramblings

  • Fun Spelling Facts: As an innocent child, I learned to spell Wednesday by remembering it had ‘NES’ in the middle of it. Also, you can’t spell the word ‘excellent’ without using my IRL username, Ellen. That’s just how it is…

I stole this Lightning GIF from somewhere online and needed an excuse to use it.. Sorry internet.
  • This will be my last post before Christmas so I would like to wish everyone out there a very Merry Christmas, and/or a happy whatever holiday you do/don’t choose to celebrate. I wish you all health and happiness for the holiday season and beyond! 🙂
I really hope evil Santa doesn’t add to my backlog problem this year.

Feel free to share your glorious conquests in that comment area thingy below. I could honestly use more inspiration…

“I went to the zoo the other day. The only animal they had was a dog. It was a Shih Tzu.” – Drinkin’ Buddy, the cold beer and lame joke dispensing robot in Fallout 4.

  1. One of many things that always stops a gamer from finishing their games; the evil sands of time. Sometimes it would be great to have a magic wand to stop time. Keep at it, you’ll get there one day. Merry Christmas to you too!

  2. Posting a weekly report about my, erm, “progress” seems to be a very good idea. I’ll try to write one after Christmas.

Currently I’m trying to finish Fallout: New Vegas and I have the same problem: too many sidequests and interesting locations distracting me from the main quest. Sometimes I think that open-world sandbox games were a mistake in video game evolution :^)

BTW, do you play F4 with mods? I’m planning to buy it after I’m ready with New Vegas, so maybe you could recommend some interesting mods?

    1. Awesome! I look forward to reading about your “progress” 🙂

Agreed! Too much content really chews up that time thing. I haven’t tried any mods yet. They sound dangerous since I’m having enough trouble getting through all the original content, haha.

  3. Ah the perpetual backlog curse. Though you feel stalled right now, you did complete a few things lately that are pretty awesome, like Zelda!

I’m looking forward to when you can join the FFIV bandwagon. I’m glad you’ve moved it up on your list of things to do because it’s an awesome game. I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

    1. Those backlog things are pure evil eh? Thank you for the encouraging words! I did feel really proud when I finally got through the original Zelda. I need to remember that I did accomplish some things at least, haha. I can’t wait to play FFIV! I really hope my PSP still works though. I can’t remember the last time I it turned on.

Speaking of the original Zelda… I’m really enjoying your Let’s Play of that game! I didn’t even notice the map in the corner of the dungeons looked like what the name of the labyrinth is. I didn’t know that the Famicom controllers had microphones in them either. That mechanic of shouting to kill the “bunny ear” guys seems way ahead of its time. I’m learning a lot from you. I finished watching Part 5 today. Ugh, those damn Wizzrobes are such a pain… You handle them professionally though! I lost count of how many times they killed me… I’ll have to finish watching it after the holidays. I’m stuck in an area with horrible internet currently.

      1. Zelda is certainly a tough game, so getting through it is definitely an accomplishment! I’m glad that you enjoyed the game and that you’re enjoying the LP and that you’re learning a little bit. I had the convenience of the map in hand while playing and seeing all the labyrinth names spelled out. Wizzrobes are definitely the worst and I wish that they would all go back to hell from whence they came. After a while when I got a hang of it, they weren’t so bad. It just feels like the game hammers you with them all the way to the end after you meet them the first time.

Let me know what you think of the rest of the LP! I hope that you have a lovely holiday and that your travels are safe ones.

  4. Merry Christmas! Glad to see you’re enjoying yourself in Fallout 4, particularly the Silver Shroud bit. Finding all of the costumes and weapons to wear along with it was so much fun. Hopefully you dig The Last Guardian as much as I did, whenever you get around to it. Pretty incredible stuff.

I was thinking of doing some sort of Final Fantasy project in 2017 for the anniversary as well, but I’m not sure what. Ash’s FFIV review also reminded me that I own FFIV: Complete on PSP and I’ve been itching to get back to it, so that makes two of us that can blame her for the game ending up higher on the backlog list.

I’d really, REALLY like to take a whole year away from actually buying games (unless they’re on a good sale, of course) and just focus on backlog stuff. The things I want would more than likely be cheap near Black Friday and I’ve been dying to make a dent in this impenetrable beast for a while now. But… I’ve already failed, since Persona 5 is already paid off. And I’ll cave again if new Final Fantasy stuff is released. And the Nintendo Switch. Fuck.

    1. Thank you! 🙂 After I’m done with Fallout 4, I’m going to try and squeeze Last Guardian in before FFXV.

When you decide what to do, I’m looking forward to reading about your Final Fantasy project. That just goes to show epic her FFIV review is. It’s actually making us play the game sooner! 🙂

I’m going to try really hard to not buy too much in 2017. Sales always make me cave though. Square will probably release shiny Final Fantasy things that I have to buy as well. Oh right… That damn Switch thing is coming out next year too. Hopefully I won’t be able to find one, like every other Nintendo product launch I’ve experienced so far, lol.*sighs*

      1. I grabbed a Wii and Wii U at launch and was disappointed in both for a while, so I’m actually considering waiting on Switch to see how it’s received, how Nintendo handles the Virtual Console, and how the library looks after half a year.

Hopefully I think of *something* FF related this year, haha. Enjoy TLG!

  5. The sands of time strike again! My backlog is the worst, going back to two decades in the time of PS2 / Xbox. I still have tons of games that I still have that I haven’t completed….

Make sure to check out my Game of the Year which drops on 28th of December which will be my last post for 2016. Anyways, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Man, does it feel good to stop writing for a while and just get on the backlog train.

  6. Weekly posts help keep you honest, and oddly enough even though you’re using time to do them that arguably takes away from working on the backlog, they still help you conquer the gaming backlog (see what I did there?). I think it’s because of guilt…at least that’s on my part. I know I’m going to update my progress, and I want to have SOMETHING to show for it. Same goes for reading and writing. I don’t want to have to admit that I got nothing done for shame, and virtual responsibilities beat out the real world any day. The real world is a scary place D:

Ten points to Gryffindor for that gif. I’ve seen a similar one with Cloud, but I like that Lightning one better. Although they both have the same face hehe. Squeenix did a bit of a palette swap with them.

I have Type-O and The Last Guardian on my backlog list thanks to Mr. Cheap Boss Attack, and I shamelessly purchased World of Final Fantasy due to his evil meddling bahaha.

Thanks for the shout out for my loooooooong winded FFIV review. I can’t even imagine how much longer my VII review will be, oh my…

Have a Merry Christmas oh! and a Happy Birthday, too! ♥

    1. Congratulations!! WordPress has informed me that your liking of this post was my blog’s “500th Like”. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and read my ramblings. 🙂

Knowing that I have to report to the internet about what I’m up to now is really helping. I was inspired by all of your great “State of The…” posts, along with a couple other wonderful bloggers out there. I’ll take my blissful virtual world over the depressing real world any day!

I’m glad you liked the GIF. Cloud and Light do seem similar now that you mention it, haha. At least Squeenix isn’t as bad as the CoD games. Someone showed me a video where the end scene in two different CoD games had the exact same movements, just with different characters…

I think your browser’s spellcheck might be broken still. It’s spelled “legendary” not “loooooooong winded”. I am so ready to read that VII review! I can already imagine how awesome it’ll be since the game is so special to you. ❤

Aw! Thank you. My not-so-special day is always overshadowed by the behemoth Christmas thing the day after. It really means a lot to me when someone remembers my cake day. 🙂 I can't believe I've reached IRL Level 28 already…

      1. “Report to the Internet immediately!” That’s going to be the future hehe. I’m happy I could be a part of your 500th like. The State/status posts really do keep you honest. I, too, gleaned it from other bloggers. It’s a great way to keep up with whatever you’re trying to do AND keep steady content on your blog: a win-win situation.

Squeenix loves beautiful people, and while Cloud and Lightning do look alike, they’re still far different in personality.

Ack! It’s going to be like novel length :p I’m already writing notes for it even though I’m quite a ways away from playing VII. Thankfully, I’ve said a lot of what I want to say in essays, but I’m sure I’ll think of more when I play. I had no idea that the review for IV was going to be so long. I just start talking and I keep going.

I can only imagine. My birthday is at the end of April so it’s quite far enough away from Santa time that no one forgets it, and my husband’s is at the end of October so he’s just enough before. I think my late twenties were the best age. I was out of that awkward early adulthood stage and once you achieve that, you just kind of coast. I really don’t get why Christmas isn’t a cake holiday. I mean you have everything else. Why not add cake 😀

        1. From what I’ve seen, the angry internet jury seems to think Lightning is just a Femacho mashup of Squall and Cloud… Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and I respect them, but I’m just going to say I don’t quite agree with that statement at all. *resists urge to go off on lengthy defense rant*

The Broken Rose, so far of course, and Northern Lights are masterpieces, so if your review of VII turns into a novel, I know it’ll be awesome! 🙂

Spring and fall are perfect for Birthdays. After I graduated college it felt like someone played the “Song of Double Time” from Majora’s Mask. I blinked and now I can see 30 just around the corner, haha. I think every day deserves to be cake day. Everything is always better with cake! 🙂

          1. People are entitled to their informed opinions, and I’d love to read a your defense of Lightning. Even though I don’t know her character well, I can make some guesses as to why people say that. They’re probably the same people who call Cloud and Squall emo and broody as if emotions are such terrible things. Both of those characters have VERY good reasons for being they way they are, and Cloud doesn’t really become emo/broody until Advent, and he sure as hell has a reason to be! Squall has abandonment issues, and I see him as a fellow Taurus. When we get hurt, we tend to withdraw because logically, it’s only going to happen again, and they only way to avoid it is not to engage. We wear our hearts on our sleeves (even though we may try to act like we don’t care) and they get bruised so easily, but if we act like things don’t bother or and/or withdrawn, it’s a defense mechanism. I may not know Lightning, but I know Squeenix is fantastic with nailing the psychology of characters.

Omg I would love to turn these reviews into a book. That would be amazing *dreams*

My twenties just flew away, too! I graduated from college in 2003 more than ten years ago. Where the hell did the time go? I went to grad school for a bit, too, but gave up on that around ten years ago. Like I’m looking at 40 being my next milestone birthday o.O

Everything is better with cake and kittens and coffee, but not all combined. Except for coffee cake. That’s divine.

            1. True. “Ligthing[sic] sux!!1 LOLz ” is NOT an informed opinion, lol. I want to try and write a defense essay for her, but I’m not very confident in my ability to do so. Oh well… I’ll see what I feel like doing.

I really connected with Squall a lot too. I hate to admit it, but teenage me had a bit of a crush on him when I played VIII, hehe. He’s definitely another INFJ. I could understand how chaotic he feels inside, and why he withdrwals/puts on a cranky face, because I pretty much have the same defense mechanisms IRL. I read forum discussion somewhere about how most of Squeenix’s lead characters are INFJs. I suspect there may be some on their development team. It makes me happy knowing people do understand how I feel, and feel exactly the same way IRL. Square is really awesome at creating interesting characters! They really do understand psychology.

I would so buy your epic book of Final Fantasy reviews! Where can I preorder? 🙂

I’m just going to try and ignore the passage of time. I’m only as old as I feel, not what my silly age number is.

Kittens and coffee/cake end badly for sure, but OMG I love coffee cake ❤

              1. Omg let’s not get started on how to start a flame war on any Final Fantasy forum. Just toss in a “VII is better than VI” or vice versa and watch the site burn to the ground. I’ve fast run out of patience with people who just say “X sux!!!” when they have no backing for their statement. You’re entitled to your informed opinion, not your ignorance.

All of their main characters are like that, aren’t they? Now I’m thinking about Cecil, and he could definitely fit that bill, too. They’re all definitely introverted, I’ll say that. Sephiroth is 100% an introvert. He’s so often described as aloof and standoffish, and you can tell he’s someone who lives in his own head (tragically much more literal later, poor Seph). Aeris is definitely an extrovert. Ah I need to make a chart! It makes sense that some of the developers would be INFJs since programming and such would be an ideal job for that mindset!

                Soon enough, soon enough 🙂

I keep bothering my old man cat who’s sleeping right next to me. He’s probably going to murder me soon.

                1. It’s sadly very common for gamer communities to be so toxic and angry. I’m also annoyed by the “X sux!” crowd. You are right! It is ignorance, not an opinion.

Now that I know Cecil better, he definitely fits in the introvert category too. Charts are great by the way 🙂

My kitties are clawing my feet right now. They hate it when I’m on the computer, and not paying attention to their antics…
