Random Musings: 8-Bit Hyrule, Nuked Boston, Mobile Pocket Monsters, Final Fantasy Swag, and Another Award

Aimlessly Wandering 8-Bit Hyrule
1
This pretty purple thing is great at kicking my ass!

I started playing the original Legend of Zelda on my restored NES. My first thoughts were “Where the hell do I go?” and “Why is this creepy man in a cave giving me a sword?”. I wandered around the 8-Bit open world, and crushed a few pesky Octorks. I soon found myself lost without any direction, so I decided to follow a guide. I guess I’ve turned into a spoiled modern day gamer who needs some hand holding. The Legend of Zelda is my favourite video game series, and I’m enjoying playing through the original. It’s inspiring to see the 2D ancestors of the Zelda enemies that I first met in 3D. I’m only slightly ashamed that I’m using a guide to find the dungeons/hearts… Right now I’m on the 4th dungeon. Guide or not, Manhandla as a mini boss is proving to be a challenge.

Settling Into Post-Apocalyptic Boston
2
I really want to find out what happened to my son, but creating my own settlement is distracting.

Poor neglected Fallout 4… I don’t know why, but I have to force myself to sit down and play this great game. I’ve had it since launch day, and there’s really no excuse for having put in less than 10 hours so far. I’m going to try silencing my inner trophy hunter, and just focus on having fun with it. I want to see the main storyline, and get as many side quests done as possible. Right now, I’m having way too much fun with the settlement creation introduction quests.

Avoiding the Pokemon Go Craze

Good advice! Though I’d be more concerned about oncoming traffic and/or muggers.

Everywhere I look I see people happily catching Pokemon in their own augmented reality world. My non gamer coworkers are big on it, and one of them actually had to call in sick because they hurt their leg walking so much. I downloaded the game, caught a Charmander, then a few random ones out of boredom, before calling it a game. I don’t hate it or anything. It’s just not something I want to invest time into. I love seeing all of the families out in the world hunting Pokemon together though.

The Swag Addiction Continues
3
Couldn’t pass up the opportunity to own Lightning, Snow, Sazh, Judge Gabranth, Squall, Cloud, and Sephiroth

Thankfully, Nintendo has been going easy on my crippling Amiibo habit. The next major wave isn’t scheduled to arrive until November, but my video game swag addiction demanded I buy something plastic in the meantime. I found a lot of Final Fantasy Play Arts Kai figures on eBay for a really cheap price. I was shocked at how big they were when the arrived (about 9″ tall). They are all intricately detailed, and resemble the characters really well. I do find them way too fragile though. The seller was upfront about Cloud having a broken leg, and you can see my failed attempt to fix it. I also had to buy doll stands so they would stop falling over. I’d never pay full retail price for these, but I’m happy I got them at a huge discount.

The Entertainer Blog Award 2.0

5

I’m honored that another talented blogger has nominated me for this prestigious award! A very special thanks to the Well-Read Mage. His blog is the definition of an entertaining blog, and a great example of what a successful community blog should look like. The party of wise mages that reside there pump out amazing reviews, and there are several community engaging posts. I remember the awesome 31-Day Mage Question Challenge, and the epic list of 200 Games we need to play before we meet with life’s final Game Over screen.

I’ve already had my moment in the spotlight, but I will answer the mighty Mage’s challenging questions anyway.

  1. What do you hope to gain from blogging?
Honestly, just peace of mind. I find it relaxing rambling about my struggle to wade through my backlog. I also love reading about what other bloggers out there have to say.
  2. What genre of film entertains you most?
Action-Adventure films. Especially if they have dark/sarcastic humor elements.
  3. Do you consider yourself a writer, and what inspires you to write?
I consider myself a wannabe writer. I wish I was a talented professional writer, but I’m just a boring person with a regular technical day job, who enjoys stringing cool words into unstructured sentences as a hobby. I love writing my “for my eyes only” novel on the side. My biggest inspiration for it has been how powerless I feel as I witness all of the evils rampaging in our world, and how cruel fate can be to us sometimes. With the right music blasting in my ear, I can sit down for hours and happily write pages about the messed up world I’ve dreamed up.
  4. What is your biggest pet peeve? Narrow mindedness. It’s okay to have your own opinions. I just wish people would be more tolerant of opposing views.
  5. Why did you choose your particular WordPress username?
I’m aware of all the online hate for this character, but Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII is my all time favourite video game character. In my eyes, she is a badass who would do anything to save the people she cares about. Her personality is a lot like mine as well. The “Nightnova” part of my username comes from my main character I created in World of Warcraft (After casually playing it for 8 years, I’ve been free of this MMO disease for over a year and a half now. I’m not even tempted to go back for the new expansion, I swear.). The “night” was because she was of the Night Elf race, and the “nova” comes from the province of Canada I reside in, Nova Scotia.

I’d like to disobey the rules this time and nominate anyone who wants to do one of these posts. Feel free to leave a link to your blog in the comments. 🙂

  1. I love Legend of Zelda. It’s my go to for watching Let’s Plays, and I’ve actually been thinking about finding another one. I haven’t seen Spirit Tracks yet, and there are some pretty awesome Let’s Players out there. I’ve never played the original myself, but I’ve watched my cousin play it. The music is so good in the entire series. It’s yet another game whose music I use for editing. What’s your favorite Zelda game? Mine is probably Majora’s Mask, because it’s the darkest and the saddest, but I have to give props to Ocarina of Time, especially since MM is set in that same world. Also Link to the Past. Can’t forget about that.

My husband plays Pokemon Go and loves it. I don’t have time sadly (nor the energy to really walk, but that’s another story), but I will defend to the death anyone who’s ridiculed for playing it. It’s done so much to bring people together. Oh, and the Target near me totally had one of its spheres painted as a Pokeball. I should make a post about that. It was epic.

Squeeeee! Yasss Final Fantasy figurines. Ahh, I have four Sephiroths and of course one of them is paired with Aeris tee hee. Then I have a Cecil and a friend gave me a Vincent. I pre-ordered the new Sephiroth from Play Arts (I think). I do know it’s $150 and should be out by February 2017 to Merry (late) Christmas to me. I would tell people that Cloud lost his leg fighting Seph, but that’s because I’m a crazy fangirl lol. I’m also maybe trying to think of interactions with them for stories, but none of these have Cloud coming off as a nice guy mwa haha.

Congratulations on your award!! You are totally 100% a writer, because you write. I know I know, I say the same thing about myself, but I’ve settled on the fact that I’m a writer if not an author, even though many of my friends argue I’m the latter, too since I have written/finished stories. This is what I think. The powers that be may be able to stop you from being published, but no one can stop you from being a writer. If you write, you’re a writer, no wannabe about it! Even if you never show it to anyone, it doesn’t matter.

As I’ve gotten you more aboard the Sephiroth train, you’ve opened my eyes to Lightning! I never had a personal opinion about her, but I was absorbing some of the internet negativity (never a good idea). I understand that too well since my favorite is (considered) the villain. I’ve yet to find a main character in FF who doesn’t have any positive qualities//merit, so in all honestly it’s hard to imagine Lightning being all that terrible, and just as Squall has his reasons for being aloof and standoffish, I’m sure she has hers, too!

    1. I liked Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass, but they seemed a bit to short to me. My all time favourite game, not just Zelda, is Ocarina of Time. I’ve beaten it 20+ times! Whenever school would get cancelled for a snow day, I had a tradition of starting a new game on it. My childhood friends always wanted to watch me play through it as well. I could probably play the game with my eyes closed now, lol. A close second is Majora’s Mask. I also enjoyed the dark vibe. There was always a sense of terror when you looked up into the sky and saw that menacing moon inching closer.
It’s nice to see Pokemon Go getting people outside together. I’m sure Marketing departments everywhere are going crazy coming up with promotions around it. I wouldn’t be surprised if stores could buy special lures to attract rare Pokemon.
As soon as I took Sephiroth out of the box I thought of you, lol. I’m tempted to track down a Yuna, Tidus, and Rinoa as well. The Final Fantasy XV ones look cool too, but I’m not even sure if I will like those characters yet.
Thanks again for the encouraging words! Some days I feel like my story is awesome, other days I feel like I should just give up on it, haha. I would consider you an author as well.
I wish they would make a FFVII game from Sephiroth’s perspective. You really have redeemed him in my eyes. I can’t wait to read your opinion on Lightning when you play FFXIII.

      1. I just found a Let’s Player for both Hourglass and Tracks so I’m super excited to start the former today! I didn’t know that they were connected, but the LPer nicely stated that at the beginning of ST so I was informed. They only have 45-50 videos for each, so yeah, they definitely are shorter.

Majora’s Mask and that menacing moon always reminded me of FFVII with the omnipresence meteor. The moon actually did inch closer fast enough for you to see, which is horrifying. With VII’s meteor it didn’t move in real time (I don’t think).

Yes! I have achieved my goal. One, people think of me when they see Sephiroth, and two, I have convinced skeptics that he’s a sympathetic character *rubs hands in glee*

I’m not sure about XV either. I haven’t been excited for a new Final Fantasy in a long time so I’m not expecting much. My one friend is obsessed with Noctis, but he really doesn’t do much for me lol. Though I will admit Sean Bean and Lena Headey of Game of Thrones fame doing voices for the movie is pretty awesome, I’m also 100% certain the king SB voices is going to die, because all of his characters do.

          1. Hehe Final Fantasy never skimps on the pretty boys, I’ll give them that. I could see myself developing a thing for XIII’s Snow (without knowing a thing about him hehe), nor would it be the first time I found a character attractive at first sight *cough* Sephiroth *cough* *cough*

I think they’re trying to top or match what they’ve made, but it’s one of those ironic processes that you can’t really force. Either you catch lightning in a bottle or you don’t. Oh lord…now I have a terrible and punny image in my head lol.
