Warning: This post will contain spoilers for the first hour of Fallout 4’s story.
After having it since launch day, I’ve finally cracked the seal on my Pip Boy Edition of Fallout 4. It took a bit of time before the game fully installed on my PS4, but Bethesda included some hilarious “educational” videos to help pleasantly pass the time.
What I Did
After a bleak introduction cutscene on how “War never changes”, I got started creating my character. The character creation screen puts you in front of a bathroom mirror with your significant other. I thought this was a very immersive way to handle this. It took a few minutes for me to finish creating mine. There are plenty of options, and each individual facial feature can be edited. My “husband” kept complementing me on how awesome I looked.
After I put my character together, I was left to wander around my house aimlessly for a few minutes. Soon, A random stranger shows up unannounced. He informs me about this vault thing he is signing me up for, and that the world will soon come to an end, before letting me choose my S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats. I love that my character actually talks, and I was very pleased that there was a “sarcastic” response option. I have a feeling this will be chosen often during my playthrough. Hopefully it won’t get me into too much trouble…
Eventually, I was asked to go check on my son (what a lazy husband my character has). Shortly after some cute family play time, my robot butler starts freaking out, and I run out to check on him. Apparently, things are starting to go down, and my character plus family sprint for Vault 111. The guards at the gate prevent the unfortunate souls who didn’t sign up from entering, but my family is on the list so they let me in. Good thing that dude showed up at my door a few minutes ago!
Just as I’m about to enter Vault 111, a massive explosion is set off, and I get sent down into Vault 111 with just a few seconds to spare. At this point, I’m really starting to think my character didn’t need any additional points in the Luck stat. After being ushered into a room inside the vault, my character is asked to hop into this creepy looking ‘decontamination’ chamber. I have a bad feeling there is something shady going on here as I watch my character take a seat inside.Sure enough, my character starts panting heavily for air, and she is flash frozen inside the chamber.
After a few seconds of blinding white light, my character thaws out to witness a horrific scene. My husband has been woken up by some sinister looking people. They try to rip my son away from him. He resists, and they shoot him in cold blood. After smirking at my character through the glass, the bad guys walk away, while my character is frozen again. I really hope I get to run into them later in the game (preferably when I have power armor and bad ass energy weapons)…
My character wakes up again, and she falls out of the chamber to the sound of an evacuation alarm. After she recovers, I try in vain to open my husband’s chamber before I make my way toward the vault exit. Along the way, I pick up a security baton and handguns. I also read some interesting logs on some of the computer terminals that give some clues about what happened. After running by skeletons of former vault workers, and smashing my way through a couple of Radroaches, I come across another terminal. This one includes a computer game called “Red Menace”. The world just ended in nuclear annihilation, my husband was murdered trying to save my son, and I desperately need to get out of this vault before I become Radroach lunch. But hey, I can spare few minutes to play a parody of the original Donkey Kong game!
After a Game Over screen, I decide to resume the serious mission of escaping this vault. After I find the Overseer’s secret tunnel, I rip a Pip Boy off the severed hand of a skeleton, and make my way out into the apocalyptic outside world. My first mission is to go to my house… And so the journey begins.
I can tell already that this game is going to be a memorable experience. The story seems really interesting so far, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I will probably do two playthroughs (one good, one evil) and I will also try to get the platinum trophy. That should keep me busy for a while…
